Edge Grinding of Glass Panes – Why Is It So Important?

Edge grinding of glass involves smoothing the sharp edges after cutting, which reduces the risk of cracks and mechanical damage. This makes the glass more durable and resistant to stress. Edge grinding reduces the risk of spontaneous breakage by a factor of three. This is especially important for large glass surfaces, such as in patio windows.

During the cutting process, microcracks may appear on the edges of the glass, which over time can lead to glass damage. The edge grinding process (rounding and smoothing) effectively minimizes the risk of so-called thermal cracks, which may occur due to uneven heating of the glass – for example, from intense sunlight or partial shading (e.g., by blinds).

Grinding also reduces the likelihood of mechanical cracks caused by impacts, stress, or forced bending of the glass.

This procedure is especially recommended for:

• wooden windows – due to the specific way the glass is mounted in the frame,
• large glass panes – with an area exceeding 3.5 m².

Ground edges not only provide greater safety but also extend the lifespan of the glass.
